Chapter Eleven. Way of the Gods

WHEN THE FACE OF THE EARTH doubled in size, the info window hovering over it changed, too.

Face of the Earth

Unique

One half of an interactive map of the continent.

Collect the fragments to restore the full map. The more pieces you collect, the more abilities you will unlock. Two pieces will let you peer into the past and control the flow of time on the image.

Sure enough, a slider bar had appeared. Its divisions were marked in years.

“Peer into the past,” Jack repeated. “That’s what Princess Ki said. She was the one who sealed the entrance to the pyramid. Lisa, let’s do the quest together? Right now, like the good old days, yeah?”

She bobbed her head energetically. What else could they do if they couldn’t see each other in real life? Play together, that’s what.

“What do you think, how much time’s passed since Princess Ki enchanted the pyramid? When did we lose Gaerthron? Three hundred years ago?”

He moved the slider on the menu that controlled the image on the Face of the Earth. The image instantly transformed. Now the pyramid was surrounded by a city, the one that now lay in ruins. Hmm, this probably wasn’t the right time. It was unlikely that the city residents would allow a witch from the Land of the Taunites issue orders on their own soil.

Jack set time forward a few decades. Here we go. A military camp with thousands of smoking fires lay near the city. Siege vehicles and columns of troops carrying orange shields advanced on the city from the camp, each of them bristling with weapons as they went on the assault. Multicolored lights twinkled along the walls and the attacking catapults launched missiles, leaving sooty tails in their wake…

“Damn, it’s beautiful,” Jack murmured. “Fights in the ghetto don’t look this picturesque.”

As the orange shields approached the city walls, their defenders began using magic actively and the colored sparks flickered more intensely. There were sorcerers amongst the attacking forces as well, whose magic proved to be more powerful. The wall collapsed in several places, allowing the fighters with orange shields to storm inside. Buildings began to crumble, one after another. As he watched the colorful display, Jack spotted the same arch where he’d fought Ged’s Harbingers. It was all here on the Face of the Earth. The city they were watching fall on the map was the very city where he and Lisa stood now.

When it was done, the victors lined up at the foot of the pyramid. The city was completely destroyed and only this magnificent structure had escaped destruction. Soldiers with orange shields parted ranks as a tiny figure strode between them. Jack focused on it and that part of the image began to grow. They were parting for a woman in loose, dark blue clothing, who pointed at the entryway. It was massive, about the size of a decent city gate.

Several hundred soldiers, with measured steps, proceeded inside. The woman then began to conjure, directing her hand motions at the pyramid.
